Breast Cancer Awareness month

Before the month comes to an end, I thought I should do a short post on Breast Cancer, as October is Breast Cancer awareness month.

Whilst we tend to focus on women when we talk about Breast Cancer (each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and of this number more than 40,000 will die), we also need to keep in mind that though rare, men are also susceptible to this illness. (Approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer and of this number 450 will die)

Age, weight,  diet, family personal history are all contributing risk factors. However, with regular breast examinations and evaluations, these scary statistics can be prevented. Evaluation of breast masses is similar in both men and women, including mammography and the earlier one gets into the habit of checking, the better.

So, although October might be coming to an end, the fight to end Breast Cancer continues...daily, weekly, monthly and yearly through research, fundraisers, awareness programs, one-to-one grass-root sessions.
